Women’s World League Super Final: North American teams take the first two wins of the tournament

Game 1 for Group B (ESP, CAN, GRE, and AUS) at the Women’s Water Polo World League 2009 Super Final took place earlier this afternoon (June 9, 2009) ending with a victory for Canada in what was also the tournament opener.
The Super Final tournament is taking place from June 9-14 in Kirishi, Russia. The second game of the day was between USA and Italy as part of Group A (USA, ITA, CHN, and RUS). In this encounter, the USA decisively prevailed with a score of 17-7.

Women's World League: USA national team defeats Canada 10-5 in Americas preliminary

The USA women's senior national team bounced back from a loss to Canada on Saturday evening (May 30) to defeat team Canada 10-5 in the second of two FINA Women’s World League preliminary matches for the Americas. Game 2 took place in the evening of May 31 at the Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, California. Lauren Wenger scored three goals en route to the victory, the first official win for the team’s new head coach Adam Krikorian.

Men's World League: Australia tops rankings overall, Iran beats New Zealand in shoot-out on last day

The 2nd Asia-Oceania preliminary round of the FINA Water Polo World League (in Auckland, NZL from May 29-31) is now complete. The tournament was among both men’s and women’s National teams. On Day 3 (May 31), Iran defeated New Zealand 14-13 in a shoot-out, and Australia defeated Japan 12-3.
After three days of play, here are the final men’s rankings:
1. Australia 9 points, 2. Japan 6 points, 3. Iran 3 points, 4. New Zealand 1 points
The teams of Australia and Japan therefore, will advance to the Super Final tournament in Podgorica (MNE) from June 16-21.

Women's World League: China wins overall, Australia beats an improved New Zealand squad on Day 3

The 2nd Asia-Oceania preliminary round of the FINA Water Polo World League (in Auckland, NZL from May 29-31) is now complete. The tournament was among both men’s and women’s National teams. On Day 3 (May 31), China defeated Japan with a score of 11-2, and Australia defeated New Zealand 14-7.
After three days of play, here are the final women’s rankings:
1. China 9 points, 2. Australia 7 points, 3. New Zealand 3 points, 4. Japan 1 points

Women’s World League: Canada downs USA 9-5 in first of two Group Americas preliminary games

The USA women’s senior national team fell to Canada 9-5 in the first of two FINA World League preliminary games for Group Americas scheduled for May 30 and 31. The first game took place at the Brian Bent Memorial Aquatics Complex in Coronado, California.
Canada 9 – USA 5Canada got off to the strong start, opening up a 2-0 lead on scores by Krystina Alogbo and Marina Radu. Alogbo delivered a backhand for the score while Radu was able to find the back of the net from outside. The United States were able to answer as Kami Craig put one in from two metres to draw Team USA within a goal at 2-1. That remained the score heading in the second stanza where Canada built on their lead with tallies by Carmen Eggens and Whitney Genoway. With this the Canadians were in front 4-1 at intermission.

The 2nd Preliminary round (for both Men and Women) among the Asia-Oceania groups of the 2009 FINA Water Polo World League is underway from May 29-31 in Auckland, New Zealand at the West Wave Aquatic Centre. Competing in the men’s field are National teams from Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Iran. Victories on the first day went to Japan and Australia over Iran and New Zealnd respectively.

WP World League (Adelaide, Day 3): Younger stuns Japan as Sharks claim third FINA World League win

Aussie Sharks newcomer Aaron Younger was on fire against Japan at the FINA World League Asia-Oceania water polo series in the third and last day at Adelaide Aquatic Centre on May 24, 2009. The 18-year-old who plays for national champion Fremantle Mariners, scored six goals in only his third senior international against Japan, pushing the Sharks to their third consecutive victory. The third consecutive win sets them up for the second round in Auckland this coming weekend — a tournament Younger will miss through selection rotation.
