6 little-known facts about the Kazan Aquatics Palace

KAZAN, Russia – From the Aquatics Palace in Kazan, Russia, one can see the past, present, and future.

On one end, perched above the River Kazanka, is the Kazan Kremlin, a fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site whose foundations go back more than 1,000 years.

In the opposite direction, about 300 meters away, is the Kazan Arena, which was packed with football fans two months ago to witness six FIFA World Cup games, including the upsets that eliminated Argentina and Brazil.

SWC 2018, Kazan, Day 1: Sjostrom (SWE) and Morozov (RUS) set World Cup records

The top swimmers didn’t disappoint on day 1 of the inaugural leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup taking place in the Kazan (RUS) Aquatics Palace in a 50m-pool. Two World Cup records were beaten in the evening session.

Last year’s winner of the overall ranking, Sarah Sjostrom (SWE) triumphed in the women’s 50 m free, clocking 23.83 and earning 979 points. Ranomi Kromowidjojo (NED) touched second in 24.55, while her compatriot Femke Heemskerk placed third (24.64).

SWC 2018: New trophy for the best athletes is worth gold

The FINA Swimming World Cup trophy was presented at the opening press conference of the inaugural leg of the circuit that will take place in Kazan’s Aquatics Palace from September 7-9. For the first time in history, the winners of the overall ranking will be awarded not only with a solid US$ 150,000 cheque, but with a more tangible prize.

Big swimming names ready for pool action at SWC's inaugural leg

With less than 10 days to go to the inaugural leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup 2018, many swimming legends have shown interested in one of the most important events of the discipline.

With room for more entries, Russia's Kirill Prigoda has confirmed his attendance to all seven stops of the World Cup, while Olympic bronze medallist and current World Record holder Vladimir Morozov and Olympic silver and bronze medallist as well as World champion Yulia Efimova are amongst the other home nation athletes registered for Kazan.
