Olympic champion Ilya Zakharov failed to qualify for the final of the men's 3m springboard at the FINA World Championships. The 22-year-old Russian had only just made it past the morning's preliminary round in which he finished 16th of the 18 semi-final qualifiers. But there was worse to come as he ended the day 14th in the semi-final, 1.90 points behind the last final qualifier, 12th-placed Sho Sakai of Japan. Zakharov caused a shock at the 2012 London Olympics when he won the 3m crown ahead of China's Kai Qin and Chong He, who between them had won the three preceding World Championship titles. Qin and He led final qualifiers in Barcelona, Qin notching 493.65 points from his six semi-final dives and He 483.15. Evgeny Kuznetsov, who partnered Zakharov to the silver medals behind Qin and He in the 3m synchro springboard final at the Montjuic Municipal Pool earlier in the week, qualified third (476.00).
