Hangzhou, Day 3: Prigoda sets new WR in the 200m breast

Two more World Records highlighted the third day of competition at the 14th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), taking place in Hangzhou (CHN). Kirill Prigoda (RUS) was the individual hero of the session in the men’s 200m breaststroke, while the mixed 4x50m medley team from the USA also improved the previous global mark.

PR 107 - FINA approves new world-class swimming event

The FINA Bureau approved today the organisation of a new and additional swimming event format, to debut in 2019: the “FINA Champions Swim Series”. It will consist of a three-leg competition, between March and May, aimed at Olympic and World medallists, in an innovative format aimed at creating a world-class platform for elite swimming and to develop a fresh focus on the highest-level athletes in FINA events.

Van der Burgh announces retirement after 100m breaststroke gold in Hangzhou [VIDEO]

At a press conference tonight, December 12, in Hangzhou (CHN) where the 14th FINA World Swimming Championships are currently underway, Cameron van der Burgh announced he is retiring from competitive swimming.

South Africa star breaststroker made the announcement moments after claiming victory in the 100m breast in 56.01, establishing a new World Championships record, in front of Ilya Shymanovich (BLR, 56.10) and Japan’s Yasuhiro Koseki 56.13).

Hangzhou, Day 2: USA shines with five gold medals

Swimmers of the United States dominated operations in the second day of the 14th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), taking place until December 16, 2018 in Hangzhou (CHN). Out of the eight finals at stake, the North Americans got five gold medals, with two of them generating new World Records.

Hangzhou, Day 1: Seto and USA establish new WR

The 14th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) brilliantly debuted in Hangzhou (CHN), with two World Records in the first finals’ session of the competition. The individual hero of the day was Japan’s Daiya Seto in the men’s 200m fly, with a new global mark of 1:48.24. In the last race on the programme, the US team in the 4x100m free relay clocked 3:03.03. Another highlight of this initial day was the Championships’ record of Danas Rapsys (LTU) in the men’s 400m free (3:34.01).

PR 104 - Extraordinary Congress: Delegates largely approve new WP rules

The FINA Extraordinary Congress approved today in Hangzhou (CHN) the new Water Polo rules by a large majority of the delegates present – the proposals received 161 votes for “yes”, six for “no”, and only two “abstentions”. In front of the representatives coming from 110 National Federations, the FINA President Dr Julio C. Maglione underlined that change was necessary for the oldest team sport in the Olympic programme.

Day 3 of Swimming Coaches’ Golden Clinic

The third and final day of the Swimming Coaches’ Golden Clinic at the Hotel Intercontinental was again heavily attended.

The morning session produced some excellent talks from two diverse coaches in Canadian and Chinese swimming.

In the afternoon, Swimming Canada CEO Ahmed El-Awadi spoke to Safe Sport and its impact in the current litigious world.

The final presentation of the clinic was from Hungarian Olympic coach Balazs Virth and his programme that guided 800m freestyler Rio bronze medallist Kapas Boglarka.
